27/05/2020 — Wrocławski Manhattan
#WrocławskiManhattan is an estate of six 16-storey residential buildings erected at Plac Grunwaldzki in the centre of Wrocław. Designed by #Polish architect Jadwiga Grabowska-Hawrilak the ensemble was finished in 1973 and is an example par excellence for #brutalist architecture.
The group of towers is linked with lower commercial pavilions. The whole complex sits on a platform. The most iconic elements are the tower #façades – the balconies and windows are covered with rounded prefabricated #concrete elements. Most likely they were the inspiration for the nickname “Sedesowce” which in Polish means toilet seats.
I had the opportunity to explore the housing complex in 2017 one year after the towers had been refurbished.
