16/06/2022 — Ephraimpalais in Berlin
Named after Veitel Heine Ephraim, the court jeweler and mint master of King Friedrich II, who had himself built this rococo palace in the mid 1700s the #Ephraimpalais soon became known as the “most beautiful corner” in #Berlin. In addition to an extraordinary portal and corner enfilades, this oval building has one of the most beautiful staircases in Berlin.
In the late 1930s, the Palais had to make way for the extension of the Mühlendamm. Back in the 80s, when the Nikolaiviertel was rebuilt to celebrate Berlin’s 750th birthday, the Ephraim-Palais reclaimed its current position just a few meters from its former location. Using the preserved original structural elements, it was reconstructed as a #museum on the basis of its #historic predecessor.
I was allowed to photograph the interior refurbishment of the Ephraim-Palais. The building is one location of Stadtmuseum Berlin and hosts the museum's graphic collection. It is soon going to reopen its doors to the public and put on exhibitions related to the history and culture of Berlin.
