Helsinki Academy of Fine Arts
The #University of the Arts has established its campus in the former #industrial area of Sörnäinen just outside the city center of Helsinki. The academy's new main building was designed by JKMM Architects and has a raw, minimalist appearance made of #concrete and #brick.
The structural concept is simple, flexible and adaptable. All rooms are arranged around a triangular, atrium-like central hall. It is the heart of the building and serves as a meeting point for the student community. All rooms are designed to provide a clear and open framework for learning and artistic creation. Raw and simple surfaces leave space for art and student interaction.
This year in spring I had the opportunity to visit and photograph this impressive building. I was particularly fascinated by the dance of the #stairs through the hall, which reminded me of the virtuoso drawings of M.C. Escher.
